Word of God – Reflection on Luke 8:19-21~
We often hear the expressions brothers or sisters when someone starts to talk in a fraternal organization, during sermons, and in St. Paul’s letters. Jesus (as Paul also does) is speaking of our spiritual membership in the body of Christ. Jesus and St. Paul do not intentionally exclude anyone, as is evident in Jesus’s statement, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God.” Excluding fathers and sisters from those who hear the word would be contradictory. Jesus uses examples of groups in a more general way to refer to the entire cosmos of God as anyone who hears the Word of God. Likewise, He also uses “and do it” to mean more than physically doing since, through the word, Jesus and others take the time to just be with God.

The True Kindred of Jesus
19 Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20 And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to see you.” 21 But he said to them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.”
