Reflection on John 19:25-27 ~
There is no doubt Jesus developed a deep friendship with the disciple he loved for many reasons. The most tender one to me is that he knew Mary would need someone he trusted to continue to love and care for her as he did. In His last breaths, Christ recognized His beloved disciple would be a son to the mother of God in ways no other human would ever experience. We can visibly be a witness to an encounter of love every time we observe those surrounding a person who has passed.

5 And that is what the soldiers did.
Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing beside her, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.
