Scriptural Rosary of the Glorious Mysteries
These Glorious Mysteries start with a brief reflection on an Old Testament moment where God’s glory becomes visible
Moses at the Burning Bush
Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian; he led his flock beyond the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, yet it was not consumed. 3 Then Moses said, “I must turn aside and look at this great sight, and see why the bush is not burned up.” 4 When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” (Exodus 3:1-5)
Moses mystically witnesses God’s presence in the form of a bush that does not get consumed despite being in flames. To Mary and the Apostles, Jesus’s resurrected presence is also an impossibility. We are called to this same glorious impossibility – the light of Jesus which burns but does not consume. Our task is to reflect like the bush.

Apostle’s Creed: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

The First Mystery: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ
The Resurrection of Jesus
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, so that they might go and anoint him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, when the sun had risen, they went to the tomb. 3 They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” 4 When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed. 6 But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Look, there is the place they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter that he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him, just as he told you.” (Mark 16:1-7)
No matter the painting, Tissot dresses Mary the mother of Jesus and Mary Magdalen in the same clothes. In this one, the middle woman must be Salome. Traditionally, she is the sister of Mary and mother to James and John, therefore Jesus’s aunt. I find easy to reach out to her as prayer partner in the same way Tissot portrays her, slightly behind the scenes, a further distance away from Jesus. Salome is there when I find it harder to go the direct route.

Second Mystery: The Ascension of Jesus to Heaven
45 Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, 46 and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 And see, I am sending upon you what my Father promised; so stay here in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
The Ascension of Jesus
50 Then he led them out as far as Bethany, and, lifting up his hands, he blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he withdrew from them and was carried up into heaven. 52 And they worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy; 53 and they were continually in the temple blessing God. (Luke 24:45-53)
There are multiple divinely assisted human liftings within this story. One is the lifting to understanding by those gathered that Jesus had risen from the dead as he previously told them he would. The other is the lifting of hearts to heaven in this second rising of Christ.

Third Mystery: The Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and Our Blessed Mother
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6 And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7 Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? (Acts 2:1-7)
In the house with the famous upper room, a simple dining room where Jesus broke bread both before and after his resurrection the Apostles and our Blessed Mother were filled with the Holy Spirit. This action of the Spirit allowed them to speak so those listening heard what they needed to hear. This eloquence has never stopped. Is this not the same effect of individuality when we listen to a homily or scripture today, even though it is from the same source?

Fourth Mystery: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven
Mary’s Song of Praise
46 And Mary said,
“My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,
and lifted up the lowly;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 according to the promise he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
(Luke 1:46-55)
It may not be immediately obvious as Tissot likes to tease with re-use from his scences . Mary’s head is bowed down towards the hole where the Cross was held in place. In his mastery of subtly he has painted the Mother of God humbly kneeling at the foot of the risen Cross. It is no wonder the Church exalts her with the same assumption into Heaven.

The Fifth Mystery: The Coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth
A great portent appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.(Revelation 12:1)
I could not help but juxtapose the many opposites in Tissot’s beginnings of Mary’s “Yes” to her heavenly glory in Revelation. The hot desert sun is beating down on her while she cloths her son love. In heaven, do doubt John is speaking of her Son clothing her. Under her feet is a lowly donkey, yet in heaven a wonderous, expansive celestual body. Mary wears a meager scarf covering, and crown made of stars in heaven.

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us. And after this our exile, show unto us the blessed Fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
Let us pray. O GOD, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that by meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord. Amen.
